If you’re like a lot of people out there, you’re getting sick of paying that home phone bill. Especially if you also have a cell phone. Cable companies are trying desperately to get people to take their internet phones with little success. People are more often turning to things like “Magic Jack” to make their phone calls at no cost using their high speed internet. There are a couple of things you should know before you run out and cancel your home phone for a $30.00 adapter.

Quality:
All Internet phone companies, like vonage, claim to have the same or superior quality with their phone service. It has been our experience, especially with speaking to people overseas a lot, you can still easily tell when someone is using an internet phone. You are really at the mercy of their internet connection and every piece of hardware in between. For the most part, it is still pretty darn good, but in our experience it’s not the same.

Cost:
There is no such thing as a free lunch! Milton Friedman said it in the early 1900’s, and not much has changed. With things like Magic Jack, free isn’t necessarily totally free. International rates still apply, and if you are calling mobile phones, it can get pretty darn expensive. Honestly, it’s still a lot cheaper than the phone company in a lot of cases, but you should do your research first. Especially if you are planning on calling internationally.

Replaces Home Phones Forever:
This is certainly what their claim often is, but there really is two scenarios. If you live locally here in the US and you typically only call in the US, then yes, we really think it does pay off. If you make a lot of international calls, you will have to make sure the quality and price really make sense before we can totally sign off on it.

What to use:
With so many options out there, it’s tough to really choose. Add to that the fact that options are nearly everywhere at Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Best Buy, RadioShack, and more, that it gets tough to decide. If you’ll allow us, we can present the best option.
