HTPC Friday: Great New HTPC Remote Released
Brando recently released the new Rii wireless mini keyboard remote and it’s pretty stunning. While I haven’t been able to get my hands on it yet, it has quickly risen to the top of my wishlist. This remote might be the best HTPC remote that I’ve seen yet.
Everything you need in the size of a remote!
First off, the little remote seems like it can do everything. It takes the biggest problem in most HTPC setups, the keyboard and mouse, and solves it with grace. Using a full QWERTY backlit keyboard, the remote gives you the ability to type whatever you need whenever you need to. Also, it has a touchpad to use to move your cursor. It gives you full control of your rig in the palm of your hand. When you are not holding the remote as a keyboard, it recognizes its orientation, altering the button structure as you switch from horizontal to vertical. If you hold it as a keyboard or a remote, you can still perform basic functions with ease.
It operates on a 2.4 Ghz wireless frequency, giving you a range of about 30 feet, which is plenty for most setups. The connection is made through the use of a USB dongle that plugs into any available USB port on your machine. It also is optimized for use with Windows Media Center, the most popular media center PC software, which comes standard with most versions of Windows 7. The lithium ion rechargeable battery is supposed to last for up to one month on a single charge. Some people might even like the fact that it comes with a Laser Pointer. Show things to your friends or annoy your cat!
At only $92.00, the Rii offers quite a bit of function for a reasonable price. I guess we’ll have to see if it can deliver on its promises.
