Everyone expresses how good of a place Google is to work. However, sometimes we need to see the side effects of being a Google. This is a prime look at how it is to be a genius working for Google, straight from the eyes of Andy Hertzfeld.

Why doesn’t Andy love his Google job?

Well, he claims that it really limits his joy of creativity. He co-authored the “QuickDraw” graphics platform that the Macintosh is known for. This is a big achievement for anybody to have under their belt, especially as a tech.

What led up to this?

Well, the Google internal system really limits what an employee can do. If they come up with something, it has to go through a complex review process, and most of the time the idea is thrown straight out the window.

For someone as intriguing within the technology industry, you would think they would treasure what he wants to offer to the company. However, for geeks like him and his colleagues this doesn’t seem to be the case by any means.

Google just doesn’t trust Andy at all?

Well, I didn’t necessarily say that. He created a coding language which is used by Google which was coined the name “Go.” So, they do trust him to an extent, just not as much as you would think they would trust a person who has made such a distinguishing marking within the computing world.

Wow! You would think their offices show they encourage innovation.

Well, Google does encourage innovation, and they allow their employees to use 20% of their work time in order to work on projects that they want to work on. As long as it benefits Google that is.

However, when you start diving into the corporate world of Google, it gets quite complex and as said above it gets quite hard to persuade Google to even use the idea that you come up with.

Google may be a great place to work at, then again it could hurt a tech’s level of creativity.

The emotional effect of this can cause quite a damper on a tech. No matter what we work on, we always want to be creative, just as an artist would when they draw out their next piece of artwork.

By knowing you’re really limited as far as what Google will accept, you will probably just end up thinking that no matter what you do, it really doesn’t matter.
