Default Routers

Does anyone have any suggestions on acquiring a good router for home use? Brands, specs etc. I have 2 Desktops upstairs and a laptop down stairs used by a friend(approx. 30 feet away)and we are having problems getting and configuring the right kind of router for the job.

Presently I am using a Lynksis wireless-G broadband router and it is utter crap and slows down our connections to a crawl. I want to upgrade. What are my options for a better router to set up?

Nothing too fancy, but we are willing to spend a decent amount to get something that does a good job and doesn't choke or throttle the connections in the event we are both using a bandwidth sucking program such as utorrent. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thnx
