Default HP dv9700/dv9933cl speakers not working

Hi,
I have no sound coming out of the speakers. I have sound coming out of the headphones when they are connected.
Several months ago I sent the motherboard for repairs for no video and was told it was not the usual problem with nVidia overheating and although there is nVidia 8600 GS it is discrete video, not the integrated video with overheating problem. During the repair they said it was some other power circuit and they fixed it.
When I got it back and assembled it everything was working perfect, even sound.
One day I used the headphone jack to listen to music and after I unplugged them the speakers never came back on.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Realtek High Definition Audio drivers and software and rebooted several times. I used the Ubuntu live cd and no sound came on in there also.
I have seen posts where someone modified a .cva file for drivers and got their speakers to work again however it was not the same model as mine.
I have also seen where many HP laptop owners are having this speaker problem also. Is this a common problem with HP laptops?
Someone even mentioned after a windowsupdate they lost audio.
I am also wondering if there is some kind of switch in the audio jack to disconnect the speakers and somehow it is messed up but I have seen no posts about it and how could hundreds of laptops have the same problem.
Thanks in advance.
