Default Hard drive

I pulled the extra ram out and did a diagnostic with the CD that came with the computer and it came back with a whole bunch or errors on the hard drive. The next step I believe is to replace the hard drive. The extra RAM I bought was from Crucial and was recommended by a tech i hired one day. I trusted that he understood the specs i needed. Not really sure. I don't think it was reading the added memory because I don't think the numbers changed when I went into the bios. Could I have ruined the extra RAM somehow? What is the safest way to handle it? How would I know if I did ruin it?
