As a fellow beginner I am excited for you. I know how it feels to make it over some of those hurdles. Good Job BOBBY!! I don't see why you couldn't replace the dvd drive with a DVD burner but I am not an expert. Never done it. This link might have some answers for you though.

How to install a dvd burner

Shouldnt have any problems, probably be an ide connection so best sticking with that, i would go with an internal one you can always reuse it if you upgrade further.

I would just have the one internal drive (well,... not counting the hard drive) ...the DVD burner will probably do it all...read and write both CDs and DVDs. No reason for another CD or DVD drive besides the DVD burner.

Having 2 DVD drives or 1 DVD-ROM/CD/ and 1 DVD burner is okay. When you have a lot going on you can't afford to have one of your drives take a crap on you. This is only if you're dedicated to burning a DVD/CD with the one and or using the other for watching movies/playing PC games. I just like to have a backup because we all know that DVD/CD drives all die out sooner than later and always when you least expect it.
Most people don't need to get 2 DVD drives because they think the one drive can take the load for all things(and in most cases it can) but if you plan on doing anything more than a few operations(and using it on a daily basis) I would go with 2 to be on the safe side. They are cheap anyways depending on the brands you get. I usually stay in the $30-$50 range and I never go wrong. They last me at least 30X their weight in gold.

Default DVD Burner Update.

Hello friends, I have successfully completed my second project removing a dvd rom drive, and installing a dvd burner on my computer. It took two attempts to get it right. The first time I didn't adjust the jumper before installation, and the computer did not recognize the burner. I looked over the computer mastery program installing a dvd and learned that the jumper should always be to the left, so I just made sure the jumper was all the way to the left on the dvd burner, fired up that old guy and there it was that jumper made all the difference. Thank you all for your input and help.
Bobby

PS: I have read this on the Website where I purchased the dvd burner that if two drives are on the same IDE cable that one of the drive jumper should be set on Master and the other on Slave. I did not see this in the installing a dvd drive on the mastery program it said the jumper should also be on the left of the other drive. Any info on this.

If everything is working ok, and if the computer is not too old, it could be set to "cable select" which isn't dependent on jumpers but where the drive is located on the cable connections. I'm not sure though.
