how can diagnostic a motherboard to see it bad

| Welcome to the forum Mike. It is hard to say. Can't really diagnose just a Motherboard. Often times there are issues happening with a computer that would point to a bad motherboard. Maybe if you explain the issues you are having and give us a bit more information we might be able to take it a little further and give a better answer. Why do you think it is your motherboard?

its more a case of eliminating everything else till the only thing left is the m/b or the cpu , but we could do with more info

Well one sure way of telling if the motherboard is bad, is if it has blown caps. Mother Board Capacitors If you look at the caps on your Mobo and they have blown, then you can stop right there and know the mobo is bad. Other than that, what daisy and popeye are true.
