I am planning to start a small firm of my own. I just want to know whether licensing for small companies is necessary or not?

It varies from state to state, but if you're going to run a legit business you need to get something from the state such as a sales tax permit. If you're going to be a business open to the public, and if you're going to be selling taxable goods and services, then you'll need to charge sales tax and then send in the sales tax at certain times of the year. In some states (and even some cities) it is a crime to operate a business with some type of license or state permit. If you also have such a license or permit, you can sometimes get items for at the wholesale price and then re-sell at the retail price. If you're a licensed seller, and if you're buying items for resale, you can often get a reduction in your cost. Contact your local Chamber of Commerce and they can give you guidance as to what you should do locally, and contact your state's comptroller office as far as what you need on a state level.

You can also try the SBA. (Small Business Association). If you have one near you, they can help show you want all you need to start a business.

I do not have a sales tax permit. On paper I only sell services. And in my state, services are not taxable. I tell the state that I make the customers buy their own parts and for the most part that is true.

But I do have a business license and insurance.
