Default This Computer Course

I've spent the last few days, after buying the course watching the videos and reading some of the free lessons that come with membership. I've already developed a little confidence and have done a few things with my computer that I would not have attempted before.
Today I uninstalled Norton 360 from my computers and it corrupted the DVD/CD drivers. I got rid of Norton because it was going to cost me $70 to renew so I went with the free program from Avast. With a little bit of googling I managed to get "my computer" window to show me my drives again. I couldn't use the drivers disk, because my computer could no longer find my drive. I did get it fixed and it made me feel pretty good. Now hopefully Avast will do a good job for me...you gotta' do what you gotta' do and I didn't have the $70 bucks to spare.

Congrats on figuring things out. If most of us had known you were using Norton we would have recommended you uninstall it. It is not thought of very highly here to say the least. I use avast and have for about 2 years on most of my machines. In fact we usually recommend this link to uninstall Norton because it is hard to get all of Norton to go away. You are the second person I know of on this forum who lost their DVD/CD drives installing Norton. Never found out if that forum member if he uninstalled his Norton and got his drives back. So good job.

did you use the uninstall tool from the norton site, if not i would run it now, and consider yourself lucky, having to reinstall the entire operating system because of uninstalling norton the wrong way isnt unheard of.

and saving $70 isnt the main reason for getting rid of norton, main reasons are its crap and it sabotages your computer when you try to get rid of it, i would rather have the viruses than have norton

Default Norton

Thanks for the feedback. I'm new to this 'fixing computers thing' and pretty new to the forum. I've had Norton for almost a year on three machines. It really hasn't given me much grief until I uninstalled it. That is when I lost my drive access in two of the machines. Like I said, I googled the information because my wife's computer was one of those that was disabled. Got to be careful when working on the little woman's computer. You had BETTER get it up and running in quick fashion or there will be no Supper and no anything else. Ha Ha. So I had to geter' done! I do appreciate the feedback and hopefully I'll be able to provide some of my own when my knowledge increases...but it may be awhile. I'm gonna' stop talking about me now and do a little studying. Have a good day.

when i first bought a computer (not all that long ago) i did the same thing bought norton 360 and didnt have a problem, that was the problem i didnt have any problems according to norton, but i knew enough to realise something wasnt right and started looking at alternatives, downloaded a few free anti virus and it turned out i had every virus known to man, in my opinion norton isnt just crap its dangerous, at least if you think your computers not safe you can avoid anthing like online banking but when you think your safe its another matter, then comes uninstalling the damn thing, i ended up reinstalling the os to get my computer working again because norton sabotages it if you try and uninstall (i managed to fix a few of the problems but some only a install would fix), you wont hear much good said about norton on here or most other forums, its probably responsible for more problems than the viruses its meant to remove.
