Let's say my test computer has been unplugged for a couple of weeks. If I am going to work on it do I need the wrist band since there has been no current running through it?

I think that the wrist band is to protect the computer against the static produced by your body, not the electric current. I'm not exactly sure though.

I seem to have fell for the wrist band myth a when I began, until I started working on the insides of computers without one. Now I know it's a crock. I watched a friend comb his cat with his RAM and nothing happened. We put it in and everything works 100%. Static is a Myth to get you to think working on PC's is a techie-ONLY thing. It's complete bullshit. I installed 3 processors and a dozen sticks of RAM without one, nor will I bother to get one.

Wouldnt worry about it but i would avoid placing your computer on carpeted floor, stick it on top of a desk or put a board under it, not a great believer in anti static wrist bands and stuff but i think dragging it around on a carpet is asking for trouble.

Remember:Humidity kills static as static develops from dryness and heat. A humidifier will solve that problem hands down. Even in a carpeted room.

When I submitted this thread I thought it might have been a stupid question but I got a lot of great feedback. I guess I never know when something I may think is insignificant may be significant and the feedback might help someone else.
