Default Computer Acronyms

Beginners: Entering the computer world of being your own IT is entering a whole world of computer acronyms. I have never really been fond of acronyms because they don’t tell me anything. However, get use to it because they are here to stay and for pete’s sake you are just expected to know. Why are you expected to know? I don’t know. Me, I end up looking up the meaning of every stinking one of them (pardon my language). But pretty much the other computer language is in ACRONYMS. Occasionally, some kind soul will spell it out for you but don’t get use to it. However, I concede, once you do know them they are good short cuts.

acronym
\AK-ruh-nim\

noun
Meaning

: a word formed from the beginning letter or letters of each or most of the parts of a compound term; also : an abbreviation formed from initial letters

Discovered today:
my test computer built in 2004 has:

1 AGP ( Accelerated Graphics Port.) This slot holds the card that connects to my monitor and I am sure runs at a higher speed..

5 PCI (Peripheral Component Interconnect) slots available . These hold my modem card and sound card and I guess any other cards I want to add. I don’t think I have a PCI-E (express) slots which supports other video cards.(I think) But I could be wrong which is why I am a beginner and why the forum has moderators.

On to more unchartered terrirory.

PCI-e replaced AGP slots you wouldnt find them on the same board, your new computer will almost certainly have one or more pci-e slots, there are different sizes normally x16 and x8 are used for graphics cards, shoot me if im wrong but think largest is x32 but never seen a board with one of them.

Blue Screen Of Death

Saw this in one of the threads this week and Since BSOD didn't tell me anything, went searching for its meaning. Here is what I found out:

is a colloquialism used for the error screen displayed by some operating systems, most notably Microsoft Windows, after encountering a critical system error that can cause the system to shut down to prevent irreversible damage to the system's integrity. It serves to present information for diagnostic purposes that was collected as the operating system issued a bug check.
(and I am so frustrated not being able to figure out how to post any screen shots. thought I was doing everything backward and forward that was suggested in snipping tools and even provided what I thought was a URL)OOOO!!!! done for now!!! Taking my computer apart was easier than this!!!

Snipping tool wont work except in windows, and if you have a blue screen it means windows is upset and has just kicked you out, just write the error code down and post that, weve all seen the bsod and have no wish to see it again, error code is the important part.

Thanks. I guess you are right. But my thinking in posting it was an example for the "beginner" who doesn't now.
