Hi Safix. There are a number of things that can cause this. It has to do with your system set up (BIOS). The first thing I would do is replace the CMOS battery on your motherboard. You'll have to unplug the PC. After you unplug the PC from the electrical outlet, press the power button to discharge any remaining charge in the system. Remove the side panel and look at your motherboard. You will see the CMOS battery. It will be a round, silver battery...looks like a large watch battery. There are a couple of retainer clips holding it in around the edges. Move them out of the way until the battery pops up. Remove it and get a replacement battery at Wal-Mart or Radio Shack, etc. Put the new one in (make sure you put it in correctly...+ side up.) Then hook it all back up and see if that helps.

sounds like the computer might have been set up as a raid array and possibly one of the drives has died, in raid1 that shouldnt matter as the other drive should be a mirror of the other, see if you can get into safe mode could be a program running at startup messing things up, if it runs ok in safe mode try msconfig to stop progams see which is causing the problem

I was working from the presumption that the computer had been working before previously, and then it just started doing this. When the CMOS battery starts running low it will mess up BIOS settings, and the RAID settings can be a symptom. He indicated it was an "old" computer, and on old computers replacing the CMOS battery is a good idea anyway.

Can you provide more information? Do you know if your Windows was set up on a RAID? If so, do you know that kind of raid? RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 2,RAID 3,RAID 4, RAID 5, RAID 10, JBOD? You almost never see 2,3,or 4. A RAID 10 is just a Raid 0 and a Raid 1 put together. Sometimes also referred to as a RAID 1+0 See More info on RAIDS here RAID - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Before Changing the CMOS Battery (which would still be a good idea) if you do not have any RAIDs on your computer then reset your BIOS to factory. If you do have a RAID, then one of your Hard Drives probably went bad. What kind of computer is this? Custom built for factory build?

Might be faster if you go into your bios and load default settings.
