Unhappy Absolute disaster-in dire need of help

I have a Toshiba Satellite A665 that is trashed.
One day I was simply browsing and I got a message from the computer stating that my hard disk was about to fail and that I should back up. I backed up all my data, and shut it off. Then, I couldn't shut it on again, so I took it to Best Buy. They then told me that THE HARD DRIVE AND THE MOTHERBOARD ARE BROKEN, and that the total cost of replacement would be $600 USD .
Now, it only lasted ONE YEAR, just beyond the warranty, and I never browsed compromised sites, I used antiviruses, I used CCleaner, I deleted unneccessary files, I don't understand. What went wrong? How can the parts be so expensive?
Please help me.

First off I wouldn't trust all of what Best Buy says. I had a Toshiba Satellite (not the best purchase for a laptop) but I replaced my own HD. That may be all you need and it is pretty easy. There are youtube video's that can show you how. So don't panic just yet. My biggest problem with that laptop was heat. It just overheats too easily. Airflow in laptops is restricted anyway which make overheating one of the biggest problems and that will kill you HD for sure. Never use your laptop on a bed or rug and blow out the heat vents often with a can of air.

It seems I work on more Toshibas than I do any other laptop. The motherboard and the hard drive? If they're right, the cost of a new board and hard drive plus the labor of doing it sort of makes it not worth the expense of fixing. Even if you could get it done for half, $300 would still be better invested in a new laptop. It's unfortunate that it was out of warranty already. Sounds like a possible electrical surge maybe. You might take it to someone else for a second opinion, though.

the parts are not that expensive its the labour to fit them, going off what you have said i would say its probably the hard drive thats gone (probably), where they have got the m/b problem from i dont know, it could be they are trying to screw you, but to be fair they could have used a post card that flagged up a problem with the board, but if i was a betting man my money would be on them trying to screw you.

whats the situation at the present time, is it broke or did you have it fixed and it lasted just over a year and is broke again, if its the former, firstly i would check its not a software problem (nothing to do with hard drive), try running in safe mode if you can, if you cant get in at all try running a live bootable disc like ubcd or hirens, or even a linux live distro (personally i would try running hirens and try mini xp), dont forget to set cd/dvd as first boot priority, if that works theres nothing wrong with hard ware (apart from hard drive), you can pick up laptop hard drives at reasonable price if tou shop around (theres two types sata and ide be careful which one you get), and you would need to reinstall the os, do you have an install disc, know the activation key , and whats your operating system.

Just for the record, I sent my Toshiba Satellite laptop (under warranty) twice into the shop for new HD's the first year. They are notorious. Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings. But I have been there. Good news as I said, I replaced the HD myself. Sold it to my friend a couple of years ago and I think her kids still use it.
