Hey guys, I installed Ubuntu 12.04 yesterday, and so far its going good. But I was wondering, what are things people like to do on linux. People are always saying Windows is nothing, and Linux/Unix based OS's are real OS's. So if you are a Ubuntu/Linux/Unix, what do you like to do on your PC? What makes Linux better than Windows?

I'm using mine as a learning tool - and I like it. Since their inception, I've used windows programmes, but I'm getting used to 12.04.

I like using it as a web server. I have installed Mediawiki on mine. Still playing around with it.

After looking at your question, (I hope this doesn't seem too redundant) the OS is the thing that lets the user interact with the hardware. There are a tone of technical differences between the two, but what the user will see is the look and feel. If you load the same programs on ubuntu and windows 7, then they will do exactly the same jobs. The computer that I am using right now is dual booted with Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.04 with the Cinnamon desktop installed (from Linux Mint). On any particular day if someone else booted my computer up for me into one of the two OS's, it wouldn't matter to me which. I would get the same things done. 80% of the time I use linux because I like it. It is quick, I'm not at all concerned about malware, though I have tried to be careless on windows and have never gotten malware there either. The other main thing that draws me to linux is that it bothers me that everything about the system requires more money. If I want to install the OS it costs me, programs cost, every computer that is sold in a store costs more than it should because it has windows installed on it. An OEM windows disk costs about $150, and I would rather get the discount or get a $150 better computer, and then put the OS on of my choice. The other thing is that while I don't have any hard and fast reason for saying this, I feel like windows is designed to support a whole repair industry. Sooner or later the user is going to have to send their computer to a tech to get fixed. I don't mind this on one hand as it provides an income for me, but the linux installs that I have seen just go with no trouble indeffinately I guess. They just work and work well. The problem is that some people need speciallized software that isn't available for linux. Hopefully this helps

To put it simply windows is the best operating system money can buy, linux is the best operating system money doesnt have to buy, Linux can do just abput anything windows can do (and some of them a lot better than windows), but you have to pay for windows and millions of people do and its not cheap, people wouldnt do it if it wasnt more user friendly than the various linux versions
