Firefox has a stored google start page, so if you open firefox even with no Internet connectivity it will still say "GOOGLE" and you won't get anywhere else, as you are not connected.

what he means is google page is probably cached and is available off-line, check the driver for internet device, and reset router.

What appears to be the Google page is actually stored on the computer itself....it's not coming from the internet.
The computer may be recognizing the wireless card, but does the wireless modem or router recognize and link to the wireless card in the computer...that is the issue. If your wireless network is a secure network (and it probably is) then there is process of entering a code and getting the wireles network to allow the new wireless card to communicate with it. I would suggest you contact your internet provider and have them guide you through the process in doing that.

I've got the blocked problem solved. I'm new to this wireless and would like to know where I should place the router? i.e. should it be away from other computers?? would they interfear with the operation of it? also how far will they send a signal? thro. floors? I'd like to know the best place to set it up. I'm going from my office in the basement to my living room a distance of about 60 feet. would it make a diff. to mount it close to the ceiling? thanks!

I have my wireless router right on top of my modem and have never had a problem. Think 60 feet is too far. I use to have my wireless in the family room and it would connect to my streaming device in the living room with a kitchen in between. I am not really good at guessing how many feet. 30 ft maybe. But If I remember it wouldn't connect being in the basement.

placing router near computer shoulld effect it, wireless will be slower so if at all possible i would hardwire your main computer and connect everything else wireless so you get fastest speed, as for distance from router theres normally a built in signal strengh indicator or you can download programs that will show you the strengh, you can also get boosters

distance depends on the router and any obstacles and what they are made of, 60 feet is by no means out of question but if theres a few walls in the way also you will need luck

Might take a look at this Oldgun.

Another thing to consider in wireless conectivity is the wireless setting of the router(ergo the channel that it is broadcasting on). If there are a lot of wireless devices broadcasting in the same channel, there can be interference and speed issues. I've had customers change certain settings and increased their speeds by a couple of megs. I forget the name of the program that you can use to analyze wireless signals within range. This is especially useful in heavily populated ares (I'm in Chicago)... Good Luck !
