Default AMD Overdrive Cannot detect AMD Chipset

I have been learning about raising the multiplier in the BIOS in conjunction with my AMD BlackEdition CPU. Just downloaded AMD Overdrive software but when I try to load it gives me this warning:

"AMD Overdrive Can Not Detect support for AMD Chipset on this Computer"

Everything is brand new in the computer. And I Am Sure it is a Black Edition CPU.

Does anyone know why I might be getting this warning, error whatever you want to call it?

Before anyone gets too excited, I am only still in the researching stage of overclocking. Goal is not to do major overclocking but just learn by raising the mulitplier. I am also learning much about the BIOS doing this.

IIRC you bought a Biostar motherboard with an nvidia chipset, the overdrive utility only works on amd chipsets.

You should be able to overclock from the bios by changing the multiplier manually.

What processor did you get btw?

Thank William. I thought it might be the M/B. I just perused several other forums after googling the problem and not one Forum that I saw had your solution. Funny, it was quite a prominent issue in several forums.

CPU is AMD Phenom II X2 550 3.1G Black Edition AM3

Yeah you need an amd chip and AMD board to use those tools. Like I said, its still got an unlocked multiplier so you can do some craziness.

Kind of sad you didnt get a newer board so we could see if some of those cores would unlock but its still decent. Killer machine for a first build and not too bad price wise if you blow it up learning

So it could be the same situation with lets say a Gigabyte m/b or a Asus m/b?
I was just looking back at another forum guy had a Gigabyte m/b.

What is it with guys and overclocking? Wouldn't mind a little more speed but ya, don't want to burn up anything. Interesting reading though.

Oh yeah, if its a gigabyte board using an nvidia chipset it wont work.

  • AMD OverDrive™ utility is compatible with the following operating systems:
    • Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit)
    • Windows Vista (32 or 64bit)
    • Windows XP (32 or 64bit)
  • AMD CPU and a compatible AMD Chipset motherboard are required for installing and using AMD OverDrive™ utility.
  • AMD OverDrive™ utility supports the following chipset models:
    • AMD 790FX
    • AMD 790GX
    • AMD 790X
    • AMD 785G
    • AMD 780G
    • AMD 770
  • AMD OverDrive™ utility is not compatible with the following chipset models:
    • AMD 780V
    • AMD 760G
    • AMD 740G
    • Previous AMD Chipset models (e.g. 690G or 580X) or non-AMD Chipsets

It works on newer ones too of course. 800 and 900 series.
