not really, seem like a well established m/b manufacturer in the server market but not so much home pcs, if your planning on building a server go for it but if you are trying to built a high spec home computer it wont fit in an ordinary case and cpus will be more expensive

perfomance should be good especially if you went for dual cpu, but like i say cpus are expensive compared to the home computer equivalent, and i5/i7 would probably out perform it, all depends on the price, i certainly wouldnt say no to one going free, but i would weigh up the costs before buying one, if your after a server ignore everything i just said

doubt its going to be that slow having two dual core cpu, problem is the 280 was released in 2005 apparently, in computer years thats a dogs age, boards not going to fit in a std case, the pair of cpu would get their arse kicked by any of the more modern desktop cpu and the socket limits you for upgrading the cpu and after market coolers, and its ddr memory (ddr1) whitch means its slower and more expensive than ddr2 or ddr3, phenom II X4 or X6 would make more sense to me, might be bit more expensive for cpu and board but i think cheaper and better in long run ,

but its a good price, but not good enough in my book

think phenom x4 or x6 on a am3 m/b would be faster than a pair of opteron 280 cpus myself, others might disagree, i would go for an atx board but matx are normally cheaper and have onboard graphics (but normally only one pci-e x16 slot)

I have yet to understand the difference between a server and an ordinary PC. And why would an ordinary Joe want a server? Is the hardware different for a server? A server always sounds like something corporations have.

a desktop pc serves one user, a server can be used by thousands of client computers, thats why its not unusal for them to have more than one cpu and lots more memory than your average desktop, the fact that many have more than one cpu and they were better than the cpu used in desktops meant enthusiasts looking for raw power started to use them, down side is opteron and xeon chips are a lot more expensive and you have to buy two.

thing is cpu development is moving so fast, if you compare the newest phenom II ans athlon II, and the sandybrige with the originals the performace is much better in the space of a few years.

back in 2005 the opteron was the dogs bollocks, everyone wanted one, they just couldnt afford them, if you want to know how good they are compared to desktop cpus have a look at the price of the newest ones.

and dont forget you need two
