Real Time Clock
I commited an error. An old computer I had to replace a bad CMOS battery. Afterward it would not work, stating error 162 it lost the real time clock or NVRAM.
I can not get to the boot now, it is a old XP HP Compaq d530 USDT Ultra slim Restore Disks had no help, is there any way to get into the HDD or is it a parts computer now. It was a junker computer to learn with. Next time I find a way to put 3 volts in place while changing old CMOS batteries.

Did you reset the new cmos to defaults?

try another battery it sounds like its a dud, or possibly wrong type/voltage, but my guess is the battery is knackered, unless youve damaged something removing it

replacing the battery will load default values if theres enough juice to power the bios

I tried the CMOS reset button, putting the jumper in the alternate position, and the battery reads good voltage, I can try another battery, Boot "F" button does nothing, I suspect I learned a lesson!
No big loss, it is from a re-cycle place and a small donation. another I picked up is not working with Vista and is my "Test" computer. So no harm done, and I learned a lesson! I will purchase the IDE cables to try and get into the HDD from my test computer.
Thank you for the lessons and helpful "Forum" you have.

if its a plug in type cmos battery make sure its a good connection, if its just an ordinary button battery i would try another for what they cost or borrow one out of another computer, when you swapped jumpers did you try firing it up then replace them to normal and start normally, it sounds suspiciously like bios battery to me, could have been on its way out anyway but i wouldnt give up just yet if youve seen siigns of life on it.

you dont actually want power to the cmos, removing the battery and cutting the ppower acts as a reset button and you dont need to mess around with the junpers,

you shouldnt have any trouble getting data off the drive if its ok, personally i would pop the battery out of your desktop you know is working and install that, dont bother with jumpers just leave them in original position

I see Jameco sells a 3 volt battery with 3 inch leads. I will order one to solder on the MOBO during change out. Chip age, a lot of heat from the PSU, and very tiny fans in the Ultra thin case may have taken part also.
Yes the HDD should be ok, I'm glad it is not a customers but an re-cycle computer to learn from. Thanks to the Goodwill and recycling places the stuff to learn with is not real expensive. Need a little more STUFF!
The more I learn the dumber I get.............

No, the more you learn the more you realise how little you know, and its exactly the same for the rest of us, its also the reason why we do it. if you could learn everything there is to know about computers you would soon get bored of them, there are ALWAYS more things to learn.

I got the impression from original post it was a laptop for some reason (should have googled it) if it was a laptop some have plug in bios batteries but if its a std button cmos battery

use them dont start soldering stuff to the m/b it will only end in tears

IF
and yes its a big if you can do it try connecting a different psu thats known to be working (some use a stupid ATX mini connector), one of the main problems with slimline computers is theres so little room for air flow or fans to fix the problem, and its not unusual for components to die due to heat, what exactly is the situation now is the error message still on machine when you start up

Well, Thank you Popeye67
On the internet I found a sheet on it with instructions to down load the settings on a diskette, change battery, then put settings back into the HDD from the diskette.....oh Dear!......
So it is time to put this to bed and say "look before you leap".
