Have you went to microsoft support? Error: Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer when you try to install Windows Updates

I recently had this problem with a windows 7 update on a customers computer and that's where I went. I checked and there's a section for Vista users. I hope this helps you resolve your issue.

first thing to check when updates are not working is the time and date, the os occasionally gets them wrong when installing, or they can change either accidentally or malware, or bios battery is failing and it will refuse to update properly

could also be something running in background thats stopping it, run rkill or kasperssky tdss killer before you do the update, could also be caused by a bad update
