Hello, I didn't see anywhere else I could post this. It is a general OS question. Does anybody know what the difference is between the kernal and HAL? From doing research on various sites it's like both do the same thing, but I know that can't be true. Please help. Thanks, ilovecomputers |

The kernel is the basic building blocks of the linux os, the hal is like an add on for intergrating hardward to work with the kernel.

Thanks for replying popeye67. But doesn't Windows have a kernel? Isn't NTOSKRNL the kernal for Windows?

Linux and windows have different kernels but they were both developed from unix so would imagine theres still a lot of similarities in the way they are structured.
