Ok so now I have sound but it's from my mother board are build in. But I want to run Xonar DS 7.1 PCI Audio card. I do have the install CD that came with the sound card.
I did look in device manager and yes I have some yellow qustion marks. And I have this ( ? Multimedia Audio Controller) (PCI) Slot 3 (PCI)bus 3, device2,fuctiono)
The drivers for this device are not installed [Code28]
So I'm stuck I do have some install CD's And they did help me out some but I do not seam to have the drivers to fix this.
So how do I fix this?

start by uninstalling or disableing the onboard sound device and then try installing new driver

Ok I did turn the on board device off. And than I ran the Cd or driver (s) for the xonar DS sound card I did not have any luck. But when the driver is loading up it will ask me to now install the device or sound card. But the sound card is in the PCI slot. Plus I have puled the card a few times and I have reinstalled it. The card does not have any signs of be broken and it seams to have snaped in to the slot like it should have. This is not a new install I have had tis in this computer for about 3+ years now.
And the card was working fine and then went on the blink. I must have done somthung but just not sure. I have somthing turned off and just kind get it to activate.
This is a Dell E 510 runs XP.

if the onboard sound is working its unlikely to be a setting in windows thats the problem, could be theres a problem with the disc or even the optical drive, try updating windows then the driver via the search online option or from their website, components do fail especially when your moving them from one computer to another, good news is they are available cheap off ebay if it turns out the card is dead

I have been suspect of the optical drive for awhile now or at lest the drive it's self.Only because it sounds just like a blender when ever I burn any CD's. But it still reads and plays factory or music CD's very well.
I will try the updating windows and the driver.

just because it plays cds doesnt mean there arent any errors, with music you cant tell if something is slightly off, with data if something isnt quite right the whole program is corrupted even if there is the slightest error

Very good point and and that is just about how it acts or what it seams to be doing. As if it only gets bits of the info it needs to make things run.
When I click on show all programs I can find the logo but I click on that and it says empty.I also have 3 other programs that don't seam to want to load up right.
I'm going to stay off the fourm a while and tinker around with it a bit to day. I will get back and reply later on if I get it going or not.

I did not make any head way with my computer at all infact I'm alittle worse off now.lol We have a FRYS here in town so I do think I will run over and snag a new drive and maybe even a new sound card.I could be tossing some money around that I do not need to,but I do have another tower that could use a sound card any way. That's if I end up with to working sound cards,and as for the drive It would be nice to have a new one any way.
Other than that I'm going to give up on it for a while.

buying new parts will work but it can get very expensive, ive got several optical drives knocking around and four sound cards, all from none working computers that i picked up, and they didnt cost me a penny, cant stress enough how important it is to get hold of none working computers from anywhere you can get them if you plan to fix computers for a living or as a hobby.

popeye67, I here you loud in clear.So far I have not had a chance to snag any other or any old computers,here in my city folks seam to be alittle up tight about leting some one esle have there old PC.s.And all my kin folk that would don't have any to spare. I have one other old Dell I could use to test the sound card in and for that matter. But my son in law is using it right now for on line class.Just would hate to trash that one and cause him to lose any data are files he might have. Not sure why it would harm any thing on that old dale,it would only be smart to try it. I mean it would load up or it would'nt.
plain and simple huh. Truth is I don't really want to buy an extra sound card or take a chance on a new one when the old one might be good.
Now I'm still heck bound on buying a new optical drive if not just to have a new one. I'm cool with spending 30 or 40 bucks,just kinda tired of having one that sounds like a thrashing machine is all.
Did run some virus scans even though that might seam alittle far out it's just while I was looking for drivers I would end up on sights looking for payment for the software. Of coures that does not mean jack. I did find somthig name of trojan droper and got rid of that other wise the machine seams fine. Right now I have my screen jacked up and can't even see the right hand side of the screen to click on start and so forth. lol so I have a little work a head of me.
I'am alittle unhappy with my self right now this old Dell might be 5 or 6 years old but still has some life left in it and could still sevre be well. well hey we all have to srart some where right.
