If you are experiencing problems with your PC’s network card, the first thing you should do is make sure that all of the physical connections are working properly and reboot your modem and/or router. If everything seems to be in order, but you are still experiencing problems, there are several other steps you can take. Follow the steps in this tutorial to troubleshoot any issues you may be experiencing.

Double click on the “My Computer” icon and open the “My Network Places” window. Click “View Network Connections” and ensure that you have a solid connection. Many possible problems, such as lack of an IP address, can be diagnosed in this window. If you see any problems, right click on the network icon and select “Repair.” If further troubleshooting is required, right click the same icon and select “Properties.” Double click the TCP/IP settings option and make sure they are set to automatic. You can also try reinstalling your network card. From your desktop, right click on the “My Computer” icon and select “Properties.” Open the “Hardware” tab and select “Device Manager.” Click the plus sign next to the “Network adapters” category. Find your hardware from the expanded list. Make sure you have the drivers installed, and if you do, right click on the device and select “Uninstall.” Click on the computer icon at the very top of the window to scan for hardware changes. The network card should be reinstalled automatically. If it does not reinstall, your hardware is most likely dead and should be replaced.

Free tools like Winsock Fix may also be able to repair your connection. Windows XP users can also go to the start menu, click “Run” and type “cmd” into the search box. In the next window, type “cd..” and hit “enter.” Next type “ipconfig” and press “enter.” This will display all of your network addresses. If nothing is shown, you are not pulling an IP address. Check your router and connections again if this is the case.
