Firefox is arguably the fastest, most reliable web browser available. If, by chance, you wish to speed up its performance, there are several steps you can take. Follow these instructions with caution, because tweaking software can potentially lead to performance issues.
Open a Firefox window and press the “control” and “j” keys at the same time to bring up your download history. Some say that clearing this history can lead to minor speed benefits. Click the “Clean up” button to delete these records. Don’t worry, this will not delete your downloaded files.
You should next check to see if you have any Firefox add-ons that are causing issues. Go to the “Start” menu and click “Run.” Type “firefox.exe-safe-mode” in the text box and then hit “OK.” Place a check next to “disable all add-ons” and then continue in safe mode. If Firefox seems to be running faster, you will know that an add-on is the cause of your problems.
Open the “Tools” menu from the top navigation bar and select “Add-ons.” This will display all of the additional Firefox plugins you have installed. Uninstall or disable all of those that you don’t regularly use.
Next, type “about:config” in Firefox’s search bar and press “enter.” This will open the browser’s configuration window. Click within the “Filter” bar and type “browser.” Find the item called “browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers.” Double click on this item and change the “-1” that appears to “0” and then hit “OK.”
Next, search for “pipelining” in the filter bar. Double click on “network.http.pipelining.” Next, double click on “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” and change the default number to “15.” Search for the word “persistent” and double click on “network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server.” Increase this number to 15 as well.
If you are still having problems an addon called FasterFox can be downloaded and tried.
