Lesson 1 Picking Your Domain Name-
Really the first step to setting up your website is picking the domain name, the url, what people type into their browsers. It seems like something that is super easy, in fact buying them really is but there are some important things to keep in mind before you do, we have learned many things from buying terrible domain names and we have listed them below.
KISS-Keep it simple stupid, keep your domain name as short as reasonable, easy to remember, and avoid things like hyphens for a lot of reasons. First nobody can remember an email address like someguy@company-that-didn’t-think.com second the domain name is too long and too complicated to pass around easily with word or mouth, and it doesn’t really say who you are or what you do.
Don’t Make Them Think-Your domain name should do one of two things, or both if possible. It has to say what you do and who you are. Don’t pick some random domain name that is confusing to people in the search engine results.
For example if your company name is xyz plumbing ideally you would get xyzplumbling.com. Sometimes the ideal domain name is not available, it is imporant not to panic and buy something like a .net or .org always make sure you buy a .com everytime. Take some time before you look pick 3-5 good options and be prepared to have your first choice not be available.

There are a lot more tips to follow when purchasing a domain name but if you follow this basic advice you should be off to a really good start. As far as actually purchasing the domain name it is pretty easy, there are several places you can do it, we have always used GoDaddy but there are loads of others, if you buy a domain name and hosting together at GoDaddy you get a great discount so make sure to read the hosting lesson as well before you buy one. Remember once you pick a domain name it is tough to change, especially if you spend a lot of time and money advertising it. Take your time, remember the lessons above and pick some great domain names!
P.S It’s ok to purchase multiple domain names if you are not sure, we do that all the time, buy 2-3 just so we have them and then decide later, they are so cheap it is commonly done just to make sure you get it. There is nothing worse than picking a domain that is available, deciding not to buy it and them coming back a week later and it’s gone. Pick it up just to be safe.
