If you have been looking for a great, free anti-virus program, look no further than AVG 8. This utility has all of the features of popular programs, such as McAfee and Norton, however it is less likely to bog down your system. Continue reading to find out how to install and use the program.
You will need to download and save a copy of AVG’s latest version to your desktop. If you suspect you already have a virus on your computer, do not proceed past this step until you have entered safe mode. You can get to this mode by restarting your computer and tapping “F8” as the system boots up. If you are installing AVG only as a preventative measure, continue without entering safe mode.
Double click on the AVG icon on your desktop to start the installation process. Click through the setup screens as you would while installing any other programs. Agree to AVG’s terms of service and enter any required personal information. We do not recommend installing the AVG tool bar.
After the installation is done, AVG will automatically launch. Continue through the next set of screens to apply your preferred settings. You will also be asked to check for updates. This is an important step; however if you are operating in safe mode you will not be able to do this at the moment. Try to update your virus definitions at least twice a month.
AVG has many great features. It acts as a regular virus scan and an e-mail attachment screener. It can even check links in search engines to let you know if they are safe before you click on them.
To run a manual virus scan, click on the “Computer Scanner” tab and select “Scan Whole Computer.” You can also scan a single file or folder.
