How To Set Up Twitter

Transcription:

Hello and welcome to a free tutorial video brought to you by BeyourownIT.com. Today we’re going to talk a little bit about setting up a Twitter account. Obviously, we know that most people have seen it or heard of it. There are some things that you should know when you set it up and some advice that we learned over the years. If you’re somebody who’s looking just to connect with friends, or somebody who’s after trying to market your business, there are a lot of things that go into use in Twitter that you should know about.

To set up a new account, it’s fairly easy. You go to Twitter.com. You just click hit this big “Get Started” join button. Enter your full name, so maybe we’ll ‑ I don’t know if they’ll let us do this, but apparently they will ‑ set it up for BeyourownIT. Set your password, and then your email address.

This is going to be something that you need to check, so don’t send it to some bogus account or something like that. Enter your verification text, and create the account. It really is that easy.

Now it’s going to want you to check and see if the friends that you email are on Twitter. I’ve never really been comfortable with giving this. Utilities ‑ if you have a Gmail account or a Yahoo account, or AOL ‑ giving Twitter your username and password to login to your email account and look for the people that you email everyday. Know that’s kind of what they’re doing. You give them your email username and password, and their system logs in and looks for people that you may know.

I usually skip this step. Again, if you really don’t have anything in your email address that you’re worried about, you definitely can do that. Just hit Finish, and that’s really it.

Now there are a couple of options that you can do once you’re logged in. You’ve got your home screen. This is where we are right now. You can edit your profile, which is an area where you can add a photo and a little bit of personal information, if you like. You can find people both by email address or you can search other networks like MySpace and things like that.

Your settings will allow you to set a few things, obviously your display name and your URL if you have a website or a website that you like. You can also check out your devices. If you have a mobile phone that uses Twitter, all you need to do is give them your phone number, and hit Save, and you will get updates straight to your phone. They are sent via text message, so if you get charged for incoming text, be careful. If you have unlimited texts, it’s really irrelevant.

The picture tab will let you set up your icon, which goes right here. This is what people see. If you see this brown little thing, this is what people start out with. People definitely know you’re a newb if you don’t get a custom picture in there.

Design. Now for more advanced users, this allows you to select a theme for your page. Everyone starts out with the same kind of theme like this. If I’m somebody looking at my page from the outside, this is what they see. But, for example, we have an Internet marketing company called “IndieResults,” and we custom‑designed the skin. As you can see, it’s got a different coloring. It’s got a logo there, and things like that.

We have our resolution down pretty low, so that’s probably why you can’t see it. It is custom. You can go into that in your Settings Tab. You can have someone design it for you, or you can always pick from‑‑there are probably places out on the web that you can pick from. You can change design colors; you can change images; you can do all sorts of stuff to make your channel look real nice.

Once you’re logged in, if you want to tweet things, you just basically type whatever you want. Anybody who’s following you will see what you typed. Again, if they’re following you via cellphone, they’re going to get a text message. If they are using some sort of application like an update. Otherwise, they’ll wait until they log in, and then they’ll see it.

If you’re following people, I don’t know who they set me up to follow, it looks like you start out with all these people. Mariah Carey‑apparently, I’m a big fan of her‑and Gossip girl. These girls must have sponsored when you sign up for something like that.

You can unfollow somebody pretty easily. Here, you can just select Unfollow. In fact, you can even block somebody from the same screen. You can block them. I don’t know who you are, Terry Moran, but I don’t like you. Or Kim Kardashian, we definitely want to block her. She’s pretty much a waste of space.

You can do that sort of thing if you’ve got somebody suggesting or constantly bothering you; sending you messages. You can do that. You just click at the number you’re following. I already have four followers. I just signed up. Probably spammers from the looks of it “See my hot photos,” “Add me,” “What an eventful pool party,” “Check out my pictures.”

As you can see, there’s a lot of spam in here. You’d want to try to keep your account clean if you’re using it for fun or to keep up with family, and things like that. Twitter can be a lot of fun. With anything, once marketers move in, the people move out, and it’s already getting kind of spammy. I don’t know how long it’s going to last, but if you’re looking for information on how to set up a new Twitter account, this video should help you out.

You can look for people in your family, or if you know their email. If you want to find a person, you can type in their name. If I wanted to find Bill Clinton, because he’s my dad, allegedly, you could just easily follow him. Like this. He’s fake Bill Clinton, but he’s got 10,900 followers. As you can see, people are not often intelligent about who they follow or anything like that.

Also know that sometimes, if you follow somebody, this might not be the real so and so. Especially with famous people. If it’s family and stuff, I would say you’re probably fine. It’s really easy. If you need anything with it, you obviously use the Help. To log back in, you just go to Twitter.com, and let’s pretend I’m not signed in, you just sign in with your username and your password. It takes you to your homescreen.

I’m still eating toast, apparently. That’s really Twitter in a nutshell. Jump on. Have a little fun with it. Don’t get too addicted, and you’ll be all good. Have a great day, and if you like this video, please subscribe to our channel, and make sure to check out our website.
