How to Speed Up Your Computer: Lower Display Settings
There are many small steps you can take to improve your computer’s performance. If you are having issues with your system, changing the display settings is a fast and easy way to give your PC’s speed a little boost.
Right click on the desktop and select “Properties.” From the “Settings” tab, change your computer’s color quality from 32 bit to 16 bit. This will alleviate some of the work done by your video card and slightly increase overall speed.
For another boost, right click on the desktop’s “My Computer” icon and select “Properties.” Open the “Advanced” tab, and select the “Settings” button in the performance section of the window. The next screen allows you to disable visual styles and effects that you might not necessarily need.

Very big price to pay for small results. It is not possible for most people to use Windows in this mode permanently.
Better to simply turn off Animations and unneeded theme enhancements.
Right click My Computer.
Go to
Properties>>Advanced System Settings>>Advanced tab.
Under Performance click Settings
Disable anything that says \Animate,\ \Fade,\ \Show,\ \Styles\ or \Arrow.\
or
simply select \Adjust for best performance\ at the top. But this turns off features I like so I customize it.
Also:
Turn off any Desktop wallpaper, and defragment the hard drive using a free program called My Defrag.
My 5 year old computer runs Win7 like a dream with these settings.
