Website Design Picking a URL

Choosing the right URL is a very important first step when setting up your own website. It is one of the main things your visitors will associate with your business, and should therefore be a reflection of the products or services you provide.

Go Daddy provides website URLS at very affordable prices. Visit their website and search for the availability of several domain names you like. Make sure to keep them short, sweet and to the point so your visitors will be able to easily remember how to get to your site.

Try to incorporate some keywords that deal with your website into the URL. Think of search engine queries that could lead people to your website. For example, if you run a business that sells cattle in Ohio, people could find you by searching “cattle in Ohio,” “cattle sales Ohio,” etc. Google gives websites an exact match bonus, meaning that is a person searched for “cattle in Ohio,” a website with the URL “cattleinohio.com” would be at the top of the search results.

One good way to find relevant keywords for your site is to use the SEO Book Keyword Tool. Use this tool to estimate traffic for certain keywords (ex: Cattle Ohio) so that you can pick a stronger domain name.

Make sure you choose a domain with a .com suffix. Most people do not have to worry about purchasing the other extensions, such as .net or .tv. The one exception is for those who think another person might purchase a similar URL and cause confusion amongst visitors
